Object Name Quilt
Title Grand Army of the Republic Quilt
Date Circa 1906
Culture American
Exhibit Label After the American Civil War, two fraternal groups were formed by the Union: the Grand Army of the Republic, for honorably discharged Veterans, and the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic, for their wives and female family members. This quilt was created by the Ladies of the GAR Circle Number 17, and presented to the Captain John Mathews GAR Post 69, both posts located here in Springfield. The members of John Mathews’ post signed the quilt and the Ladies stitched over their signatures. John Mathews was Captain of the 8th Regiment Missouri Calvary, also organized in Springfield. In the time of remembrance after the war, quilts such as this were often made to commemorate and honor a person or a group, and then presented to them. Though their duties and activities differed from the men’s, the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic undertook their responsibilities seriously and with pride. A line from their articles of faith states: “The members of our Order are helpers of the Grand Army of the Republic. Our Motto, like theirs, is a glorious one, Fraternity, Charity, Loyalty.”
