Credit line Gift of Mrs. Charles Wright
Exhibit Label While the 1860s were marked with war and turmoil in the United States, fashion was changing and home sewers and professional dressmakers both were keeping up with the times. This dress, made of twill woven wool (or wool blend), is printed in an all-over pattern of sprays of pink roses with green leaves. The one-piece dress has two groups of velvet stripes on each sleeve, a nod to the military styling popular at the time, and was likely worn with a modest hoop skirt beneath.
