Exhibit Label Samplers such as this were used in early America as an educational tool for young women. Samplers taught the skill of embroidery, as well as lettering and counting. You may have noticed that none of the alphabets contain “J” or “U.” This is because samplers were often based on the early Latin alphabet, which used “I” and “V” in place of the modern “J” and “U.”
