Exhibit Label This Egyptian flywhisk is decorated with both beads and cowrie shells. This example of beadwork holds important cultural significance. Beads and beaded items are pieces of regalia for many African cultures. Items like this would be owned and used by rulers as conspicuous emblems of power and wealth. Beads came to represent more than decoration; to have a heavily beaded item was also a status symbol.
