Exhibit Label This delicate baby’s cap is made of crocheted silk and ribbon. It is light and airy, to, as quoted in Webster and Parkes’ 1848 Encyclopedia of Domestic Economy, “keep the head cool and the feet warm.” At the time it was recommended that children’s heads should not be covered too tightly, as this could cause them to overheat and become ill. With that in mind, delicate head coverings such as this were popular.
